Reflecting on Photographic Memory: Experiential Workshop with Tamara Abdul Hadi

Presented by the Department of Historical & Cultural Studies, U of T Scarborough

In this experiential workshop led by artist Tamara Abdul Hadi, participants will explore the potential of photography for a decolonial reimagining of our world and reflect on the role of photography in creating and re-creating archives.

Participants are asked to bring a photograph of their choice (digitally or on paper): one that has moved them or that speaks to them in a particular way. This could be a single photograph, a group of photographs, an album, a book, etc.

This program is free and open to all University of Toronto students, faculty, and staff. No previous knowledge of photography is required. Space is limited, registration is required. The classroom is wheelchair accessible, and this is a seated program. Refreshments will be served.

Tamara Abdul Hadi is an Iraqi photographer whose work focuses on the dispossessed and marginalized, the underside of Orientalist representations, the underground of settler societies, and the underworld of war. Abdul Hadi is currently the JHI Artist-in-Residence, a partnership between the Jackman Humanities Institute and Department of Historical & Cultural Studies, Department of Arts, Culture & Media, and Doris McCarthy Gallery at U of T Scarborough.
