Community support and engagement is the lifeblood of the DMG. Every donation, sponsorship, and in-kind gift is deeply impactful, contributing to the capacity for the Gallery to grow, allowing us to directly support artists, and provide the U of T Scarborough and broader Scarborough communities with continued access to contemporary art and culture.

Generous community support makes it possible for the Doris McCarthy Gallery to offer a diverse range of innovative and meaningful exhibitions, programming, residencies, and community opportunities. The Gallery’s programming, which includes a constant rotation of critically engaged exhibitions, paired with talks, tours, workshops and other dynamic community events, serves to animate and strengthen exhibition content, meaningfully link the Scarborough community to contemporary art, and create space for discourse and cultural exchange. These goals are maintained and further developed in the various residency programs that the Gallery supports. These residencies aim to provide space and time for new artistic, cultural, and knowledge production, while also offering collaboration, mentorship, and support to participating artists to foster growth and diversity within the Canadian arts sector. These critical opportunities for artistic development are made possible through valuable partnerships and continued community support. Beyond this, the financial support provided by our donors also sustains the Gallery’s collecting capabilities, allowing the DMG to support established and emerging Canadian artists while developing an important cultural and art historical resource. Our growing collection of notable artworks benefits students, scholars, and the general public through its accessibility for research and public exhibition.

Community support in the form of financial contributions and in-kind gifts permits the Doris McCarthy Gallery to sustain the activities for which it is known, while also advancing its current projects, and developing new endeavours to better serve the University of Toronto Scarborough and Scarborough communities.

Financial Gifts

Financial gifts enable us to innovate and diversify our programming, continue to directly support new and emerging artists in our community and across Canada, strengthen the value of our community initiatives, and continue to build and maintain our permanent collection. Financial gifts in any amount are incredibly valuable in supporting the Gallery’s sustained growth.

Sponsorships

Sponsorships and reciprocal partnerships with the Doris McCarthy Gallery benefit participating brands, while also actively supporting the arts in Scarborough. The Gallery remains flexible in developing partnerships to suit the needs and objectives of our valued sponsors. There are opportunities for both financial contributions and/or in-kind goods or services sponsorship of exhibitions and programming.

Gifts in the Form of Art

Gifts in the form of art enhance the Doris McCarthy Gallery’s collection for the purposes of academic research, teaching, exhibition, and general enjoyment. Works in the collection are accessible to researchers and become the subjects of historical and cultural interrogation, they are essential teaching tools for students at all academic levels across a variety of disciplines, and they foster a connection to and appreciation for art amongst the public when exhibited in the Gallery and around Campus.

Please note that some artworks are eligible for certification from the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board, and therefore are exempt from capital gains tax. For more information about obtaining certification please visit the CCPERB website.
