Art On Campus

The Doris McCarthy Gallery researches, acquires, stewards, and activates a collection of approximately 2000 works of contemporary art. The collection supports the DMG’s vision to preserve and ensure access to works by important Canadian and international artists, while stimulating conversations about the formal and perceptual boundaries of contemporary art practice. The Doris McCarthy Gallery is fortunate to be able to share our collection across the University of Toronto Scarborough campus through the Campus Loan Program. This program allows U of T Scarborough staff and faculty to borrow work from the Doris McCarthy Gallery permanent collection. This is an exciting opportunity to use your space to showcase significant artworks from the Gallery’s collection and provoke critical conversations about art and culture amongst students, staff and faculty.

The process of acquiring an artwork is rigorous and each selection illustrates curricular relevance. The presence of a diverse collection of art on campus offers students, staff, faculty, and visitors the opportunity to actively create meanings based on their specific, embodied experiences in addition to the research they conduct.

If you are interested in borrowing an artwork, our Curator of Collections will first assess the suitability of your workspace, including any security or environmental concerns. Afterward, you will be sent a proposed list of works. If you wish to borrow a work that is unframed, the Gallery can arrange framing at a cost to your department. After the work has been installed, the borrower is responsible for helping the Gallery ensure the work stays safe and secure. Please contact the Curator of Collections immediately if there are any environmental changes that may pose a risk to the artwork. This includes: if you would like to move the artwork; if there are any changes in the installation space such as renovations, removal of blinds, painting, moved furniture, etc.; or any instances of damage, theft, or vandalism.

Please direct all inquiries around the Campus Loan Program to our Curator of Collections.
