Beyond the Frame
by Graduating students in the Studio Art Program, U of T Scarborough, with instructors Will Kwan and Sanaz Mazinani
This publication accompanies the exhibition Beyond the Frame, the 2025 Studio Art Graduating Exhibition presented at the Doris McCarthy Gallery, produced by graduating students in the U of T Scarborough Studio Art program with instructors Will Kwan and Sanaz Mazinani. We find ourselves in world beleaguered by conflict and unrest, in a political moment marked by division, restriction, and the raising of borders. The realm of art can offer a sanctuary from this chaos, but it is also a domain where the boundary is anathema. Beyond the Frame offers a counter-narrative to the current moment, reaffirming a conviction in the value of fluidity, heterogeneity, and otherness. Spanning painting, collage, photography, video, digital art, sculpture, and installation, the thirty-seven works in the exhibition probe the limits and potential of our senses, explore the interplay between self and society, and reckon with a myriad of internal and external conflicts, emotional, psychological, technological, ecological, and geopolitical in nature. Beyond the Frame is the panoply over the panopticon, the panorama as opposed to the snapshot.
The publication includes artist statements, images, and an introduction by instructors Will Kwan and Sanaz Mazinani.
