Alyssa Bistonath

Summer Artist-in-Residence

For the month of July 2018, the gallery was offered to artist Alyssa Bistonath as she created Portals, a documentary/science fiction film about the Guyanese diaspora that was commissioned by Nuit Blanche Scarborough 2018. Bistonath used the gallery as a place to create her astronaut’s suit, a film studio to welcome actors from local Guyanese communities. Portals was projected at a massive scale on the wall of the Scarborough Civic Centre as part of the Nuit Blanche Scarborough exhibition Styll, curated by Alyssa Fearon.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Alyssa Bistonath is a Toronto-based photographer and filmmaker whose work investigates memory, time, and intimacy. The daughter of Guyanese immigrants, Bistonath offers a new nostalgia – images that are simultaneously fresh and evocative of family mementos.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

Over the summer, artists are given a stipend, access to University resources such as the fabrication lab and technicians, borrowing privileges at the library, access to the Maker’s Space,  a studio assistant, as well as the space and other supports to explore their practice.
