'The Space Between Waves' Walk

Walk led by Wave Art Collective through the Highland Creek Valley, addressing migration & identity through music, discussion & activities

Join Kevin Ramroop and Sampreeth Rao of Wave Art Collective as they lead an outdoor guided walk through the Highland Creek Valley based on their three-part audio project The Space Between Waves.

Audio clips from the project will be played throughout the walk, as starting points for guided discussions about Scarborough, migration, and identity: What is your earliest memory of Scarborough? Are there any sights, sounds, or smells that always remind you of home? What are your favourite words or phrases that you only use in Scarborough? What’s your favourite dish from your homeland? How far back into your family history can you trace back?

Using some of these questions as prompts, participants will also engage in a short writing/sketching exercise around memory, home, and place-making. The walk will wrap up with a short performance, drawn from music from The Space Between Waves.

The walk will begin from the H-Wing Patio at U of T Scarborough at 1 pm and will go forward rain or shine. Physical distancing will be in place, masks may be required, and participants will be asked to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms and risk factors before attending the program. All visitors to the U of T Scarborough campus must be fully vaccinated and may be required to provide proof of vaccination. Registration for this program is required.

Please dress for the weather, wearing good walking shoes, and pants that can be tucked into socks (for avoiding scratches/insect bites). Sunscreen and/or insect repellent also recommended.

Please also bring paper, pen, and any other supplies you may be interested in using for the writing/sketching activity.

This program is free, and all are welcome!

About the facilitators

Wave Art Collective is an interdisciplinary group of artists, educators, academics, and mobilizers creating art and educational programming to foster Scarborough’s creative scene.

Routing his way artistically through uprooted patterns of migratory roots in Scarborough, Kevin Ramroop brings his nuanced perspective of language and storytelling to his creative, community, and academic work as a musician, writer, and co-founder and mentor for the Wave Art Collective.

Born near the cradling waves of Goa, India and raised in the diverse community of Scarborough, Ontario, Sampreeth Rao is a filmmaker that tells South Asian diasporic stories. He is currently working on Where the Trees Speak for Nuit Blanche 2022, and is the co-founder of Wave Art Collective.
