Spectrum Soundbath with Marilyn Yogarajah
spectrum soundbath is a communal and collective sound healing practice based in collaborative play. Using a variety of instruments and their knowledge of improvisational and classical music techniques, marilyn yogarajah works to facilitate a space where everyone can come curiously and play however they feel called to engage.
Founded by marilyn in 2020, in the summer of the pandemic, spectrum soundbath is a direct response to the hyperindividualism of capitalism, the elitism and exclusivity offered by academia within the arts, and offers a critique of institutionalism and hierarchy when it comes to creating together.
Participants are welcome to bring their own instruments or a way to make sound; instruments will also be provided and the voice itself is also an instrument. Participants are also encouraged to bring a blanket and whatever they need to make a comfortable spot on the floor.
spectrum soundbath is programmed by Deepikah RB, in her role as Futures Educator-in-Residence.
This program is drop-in, participants are welcome to come and go as they need, and seating will be available. The gallery is wheelchair accessible. If you have accommodation needs, please contact dmg.utsc@utoronto.ca and gallery staff will follow up with you as necessary.
marilyn yogarajah is a multi-instrumentalist and poet whose practice centers on queerness and the cosmos. alongside facilitating spectrum soundbath, marilyn is in multiple projects across the city including but not limited to not a band, martian crisis unit, output 1:1:1, and but worse. marilyn spent a little over 7 years as a music instructor at Music Trends, and is currently a co-curator of Audiopollination. their primary instruments are piano and trumpet and can be found on instagram under monikers @spectrumsoundbath and @queertamil.
