Orange Shirt Day Beading: Threading and Discussion

Presented in partnership with Indigenous Initatives, University of Toronto Scarborough

September 30th marks the Canadian recognition of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, acknowledging the history and intergenerational harm caused to Indigenous peoples and communities by the Canadian Residential School System.

Join us in-person for a two-day workshop hosted collaboratively between Indigenous Initiatives, University of Toronto Scarborough and the Doris McCarthy Gallery. Learn the basics of flat stitch beading to create an Orange Shirt Day pin to commemorate those who survived and those who did not come home from Canadian Residential Schools. Our aim is to engage with a supportive learning community to gain insight into the importance of Orange Shirt Day though participation in a beading and conversation circle facilitated by Indigenous staff. No prior beading or sewing experience is required. All materials will be supplied.

This workshop is open to University of Toronto Scarborough students, staff, and faculty only. Space is limited, registration is required.

If you have accommodation needs, please let us know through the registration form or contact dmg.utsc@utoronto.ca. The gallery is wheelchair accessible, and this is seated program.
