Getting to Know Seeds with Ate Kay's Farm
Art Farm Stand Activation
Kaitlin Rizarri of Ate Kay's Farm will offer a talk and workshop from Outdoor School's mobile sculpture Art Farm Stand, where she discusses her urban farming practice and ethos, inviting participants to consider the more-than-human teachers in their life. By building a relationship to the plants she grows and harvests, Kaitlin honours seeds as intergenerational teachers that will bring us into the futures we want.
Participants will be guided through an interactive activity called "Getting to Know Seeds" where they will be invited to sample three different tea blends Kaitlin grows at her farm. Through this interactive experience she will speak about each plant within each blend, where participants will get to meet the seeds and plants she works with.
Kaitlin Rizarri is a farmer and doctoral student at the University of Toronto. Her farming practice has been centered around community food sovereignty work for many years, most recently with Tkaronto Plant Life, an Indigenous youth-led farm in Etobicoke. Recently she started her own tea farm called Ate Kay's Farm (pronounced ahh-tey). The plants she grows for teas are mostly herbs and flowers that can support us through tea medium. Her blends focus on support with grief, sleep, anxiety, depression, and our ability to manage our burnout. Her research follows her farming practice, where she likes to think about the future of our food systems in urban places in relation to lands and waters.
Registration required, spaces limited. This talk is free and open to the public, all are welcome. Please note any accommodation needs when registering or by contacting dmg.utsc@utoronto.ca, and gallery staff will follow up with you as necessary.
This program will be held outdoors, in the H-Wing patio amphitheatre at the University of Toronto Scarborough, so please attend dressed for the weather. The amphitheatre is wheelchair accessible and this is a seated program.
