Ceramics Barrel Firing Workshop with Pierre Aupilardjuk & Shary Boyle

$250 including materials, shuttle bus & food ($150 for U of T Scarborough students) 

In this incredible hands-on, three-day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to create a ceramic sculpture and finish it by barrel firing — a process where ceramic pieces are coloured and marked by smoke — under the instruction of artists Pierre Aupilardjuk (Rankin Inlet) and Shary Boyle (Toronto). All materials will be provided. Participants must be over the age of 16.

DAY 1
Saturday, January 13, 10 am - 4 pm
AA304, Arts & Administration Building
University of Toronto Scarborough (1265 Military Trail)

Return shuttle bus provided from St. George station

Participants will work with artist Shary Boyle in the studio to create a simple ceramic sculpture. All materials will be supplied. The day includes lunch and an exhibition tour of Earthlings at the Doris McCarthy Gallery: www.utsc.utoronto.ca/dmg/html/exhibitions/earthlings.html.

DAY 2
Saturday, January 27, 3 - 7 pm
Fool’s Paradise (1 Meadowcliffe Drive)

Return shuttle bus provided from St. George station

Atop the Scarborough Bluffs, on the property at Fool’s Paradise — the former home and studio of Doris McCarthy, now an artist residency run by Ontario Heritage Trust — participants will learn the basics of barrel firing with Aupilardjuk and Boyle, packing the barrel with the ceramics and beginning the burning process. The day will wrap up with dinner (inside!)

Sunday, January 28, 10 am - 12 pm
Fool’s Paradise (1 Meadowcliffe Drive)

Interested participants are welcome to join artists at Fool’s Paradise to help unpack the barrel, and pick up their finished work! Those who choose not to attend this third day can pick up their work at the Doris McCarthy Gallery at a later date.
