Buraanbur: A Somali Poetic Tradition

Presented in partnership with Midaynta Community Services and the Department of Arts, Culture & Media

Buraanbur is a form of traditional Somali poetry composed and performed by women, combining verse, rhythm, and dance to tell stories and celebrate community. In this event, Timiro Aganeh and Ebyan Gele will introduce the history and cultural significance of Buraanbur, and invite participants to engage with the poetic form themselves.

Following the presentation, Sahra Gelle—whose portrait appears in the current Threads of Refuge exhibition in the Instructional Centre Vitrines—will lead a participatory performance with fellow poet Saadiyo Hashi, accompanied by Ayan Hussein on drums.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

This program is free and open to the public. Limited registration is available for active participation and the catered lunch, but all are welcome to drop in and observe. If you require any accommodations, please indicate this on the registration form or contact dmg.utsc@utoronto.ca.

This is a seated event, held in the Instructional Centre Atrium at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The venue is wheelchair accessible.

Buraanbur: A Somali Poetic Tradition is supported by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada grant.
