In this presentation of her latest and most ambitious work to date, Toronto-based media artist Simone Jones utilizes the space of the Doris McCarthy Gallery to create Within Distance—an installation that focuses on the ways in which cinematic techniques of production impact the perceptual effects of moving imagery. By directly referencing the apparatus of cinema as well as the visual representations they produce, Within Distance consolidates over a decade of Jones’s investigation into the relationship between mechanical reproduction and perception of the moving image. In questioning this issue, Jones’s work meticulously articulates a web of relationships between apparatus, image and viewer that reveals the characteristic capacities and limitations inherent to each. Inside the environment of this installation, Jones invites viewers to consider the process of image reception—indeed, the very operation of seeing—as an act that is as performative as the production of the images themselves.
About the Artist
Simone Jones graduated from the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) with a concentration in Experimental Art and received her MFA in Sculpture Installation from York University. Jones was the Jill Kraus Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, with a joint appointment in the School of Art and Robotics from 2000 – 2003. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art at OCAD University, where she teaches in the Integrated Media Program. Jones has exhibited her work at national and international venues. She is represented by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts in New York.
