The Doris McCarthy Gallery, UTSC is a brand new exhibition space dedicated to the presentation of leading contemporary art works. The Gallery will officially open on March 11, 2004 with the exhibition Everything Which Is Yes, a survey of the works of Doris McCarthy.

The artist will be in attendance. A catalogue featuring essays by Nicole Collins and David Urban and transcribed discussion between Doris McCarthy and Harold Klunder will accompany this exhibition.

About the Artist

A celebrated artist whose work has spanned over 70 years, Doris McCarthy graduated from U of T at Scarborough in 1989 with a BA in English.

McCarthy graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art in 1930, and also studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, England and the Ontario Training College for Technical Teachers. She taught art for 40 years at Toronto’s Central Technical School and was the subject of an award-winning docu-drama entitled Doris McCarthy, Heart of a Painter.

McCarthy is best known for her landscape paintings and her work is collected by major institutions such as the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada. McCarthy's paintings are also featured in many corporate and private collections. Her honours include membership in the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario and honorary doctorates from the University of Calgary, Nippissing University and U of T. She was named artist of honour at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in 1999.

Doris McCarthy is also a prolific writer who has published her captivating memoirs in, A Fool In Paradise (1990, Macfarlane, Walter and Ross), The Good Wine, (1991, Macfarlane, Walter and Ross) and Ninety Years Wise (2005, Second Story Press).
