Maryam Ahmed Sheerani
Cedar Ridge Creative Centre Student Curator-in-Residence
Since 2013, the DMG has enjoyed an ongoing partnership with local arts organization Cedar Ridge Creative Centre, who annually provide the space for an exhibition of U of T Scarborough student artworks. This exhibition is curated by a current U of T Scarborough student, through a six-month curatorial mentorship opportunity – this year, we will be working with Maryam Ahmed Sheerani, an Arts Management student in the Department of Arts, Culture & Media at U of T Scarborough.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Maryam Ahmed Sheerani is a Pakistani international student majoring in Arts and Media management with minors in Art history and Media studies. With a background in social work, Maryam is committed to using storytelling as a tool for social change, particularly in empowering marginalized groups and promoting inclusivity.
Studying art history has shaped her understanding of how art has transformed societies through influential cultural narratives and subliminal reflections of social movements. This has inspired Maryam to explore how both traditional and contemporary storytelling methods can address issues of identity, social inequity and culture.
Through her studies in Arts Management, she aims to curate and manage cultural projects that engage diverse audiences and foster meaningful dialogue. Her interdisciplinary approach combines her passion for art, media and social advocacy.
Maryam’s long-term goal is to pursue a career in arts management, where she can create narrative-driven experiences that inspire reflection, using storytelling as a tool to inspire social change and a more equitable view of society.
